Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) has been a popular browser in the past years. As the technology advances, it is important for any browser to support the new features and provide improved security in addressing the needs of the web users.

Some reasons for Google withdrawing the support for the IE6 are:

Security flaws in Internet Explorer that hackers based in China exploited in the recent attacks on Google. Gmail accounts of prominent human rights activists were accessed using malware and phishing activities via IE6. (read full story – http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/15/ie-security-flaw-exploited-in-recent-google-attacks/)
IE6 does not adequately address the needs of the web users in terms of providing improved security and in supporting new features like HTML5, pop-up blockers and anti-phishing capabilities as most modern browsers do.

Impact on Businesses:

In larger organisations, upgrading their operating systems could be expensive. An alternative is to opt for modern browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, and Opera which can be downloaded and installed by the individual users. These browsers are fast and also provide improved security.

Conclusion:

Microsoft’s newer version IE9 and the soon be to be released IE10 have addressed these security issues and implemented technologies to support web users and their needs.

With the growing user base of smart phones, a large number of people are browsing the internet on their mobile devices. Making a mobile friendly website needs to be considered differently compared to websites as it depends on various factors like browsers, screen sizes and connection speeds. Your website can get distorted or even unusable on smart phones if your website is developed using extensive flash or silverlight.

Below are few points to consider while creating your mobile friendly website.

Create subdomain for mobile friendly website

Create a subdomain of your original website where mobile friendly files can load from. For example if your running website address is www.mycompany.com then create a subdomain at www.mobile.mycompany.com. Creating a subdomain is a standard hosting functionality provided by most hosting companies. You should be able to create a subdomain from your hosting control panel. Or you could ask for help from your website hosting provider.

Plan your navigation and avoid loading large images.

Mobile friendly website should ideally include simple features, navigation and minimalist standards. Every square inch matters between conventional PC screen size and smart phone screen size. Use comparatively large fonts for your mobile version because your customers may be looking at your site while travelling, and they are likely to be holding their mobile device. Not all mobile devices have zoom in features. Plan navigation of your mobile friendly website carefully and avoid using many levels of sub-pages.

A good example would be eBay’s mobile version of their site. It’s easy for the mobile users to find products, prices and buying products.

Avoid using animation and video streaming

Consider bandwidth usage of your visitor and their connection speed. By avoiding animation and video and keeping images to minimum would provide a better browsing experience.

Providing useful mobile friendly links

By providing useful links to your physical store location like Google Maps or MapQuest. You can also use location-based social networking sites like ‘Foursquare’ so when people “check in” to your store telling their friends where they are you can reward them with discounts and specials.

Knowing things to avoid and things to keep will help enhance your mobile user’s experience and also ensure that your mobile website is functional across most mobile devices.
